Story

“With an idea and passion to a successful product”

Sometimes it’s the first thoughts that are the beginning for something new. For example, when I bought a VW Amarok pick-up on business in 2013 and wanted to use the vehicle privately and in my free time. A permanent structure was out of question because I needed the vehicle Monday to Friday in my own metal construction company for assembly or as a towing vehicle. My idea of a cabin in size of a hardtop, with top equipment but still very compact, wasn’t found anywhere on the market. So I set about putting my thoughts on paper, or rather into the program.

Within a few months, I worked my way into the basics of 3D CAD and finally had a virtual model. The next step was to make a prototype out of wood to be able to better estimate the dimensions and the effect on the vehicle. After the girlfriend of my best colleague said, “That thing looks like a coffin”, I redesigned the design again.

A new prototype was needed. This time fully functional and made of polyester double-walled. I built the elaborate negative form out of sheet metal, incorporated stiffeners and took the entire construction to a plastics processor near Bern. Back with the cabin a few days later, I started working on the interior. A week before we left for Croatia to test the construction, the CabTop was completed. In the following three weeks the construction has proven itself as a travel base as well as a construction suitable for off-road use. The positive reactions at the campsites or at the petrol stations gave me the courage to push the project forward and possibly consider marketing it. When I got home I did a complete calculation of the cabin and found that it was not only too heavy, but also too expensive.

So there was another round of construction. This time in metal with a stainless steel tubular frame and aluminum outer shell. The dark days and evenings of winter showed the result in spring. The CabTop was born. With great attention to detail and technically sophisticated solutions, I have succeeded in creating a light, compact and extremely ingenious solution.

In order to getting better assessment to the market and the potential, I visited various exhibitions for three years and slowly built up my label alongside my normal work. Since December 2019 I have been working full-time under the name pick-up-and-go GmbH.

I used the time during Corona to optimally align my small company to the market. So I have expanded our product range and made the carrier system the focus of the product portfolio. True to the motto: “Transform your Pick-Up”, the company manufactures high-quality interchangeable components for the loading area, which can be changed in a few simple steps. The pick-up-and-go GmbH can now not only be found in the travel sector, but also offers the CabTop for craftsmen, fire brigades, veterinarians and others under the label “Work + Rescue”. In addition to the CabTop, pull-out drawer systems and attachment structures for bicycles and motorcycles are also planned.
